‘Care Home Cuts Affects Patients Quality Of Life’, States Health Select Committee

Published 14/02/2012

The elderly patient community will be suffering a “lower quality of life” due to the pressures that are mounting where the area of social care funding is concerned. Services can become severely reduced according to the health select committee who warned of this today. The MPs have also claimed that cuts in support are what is driving the increased demands being placed on the NHS. The demands on them are for a complete overhaul of how the system is being run. A report read today, they are recommending that elder care, health and housing services need to be joined together to stop patients from being “treated like a package” passed around from one department to the next. Chairman for the health select committee, Stephen Dorrell stated: “The present government, just like the ones before it dating back to the 1960s, has already stressed how important it was to join up all the services mentioned. The growing demand, coupled along with a significant efficiency challenge, is something that makes it all the more imperative than before to be able to change good words into finer deed.” “We must look to the Government to define in its Social Care White Paper on just how this critical objective will be carried out and met.” This health committee has suggested that any failure to join up the provision and commissioning across these three services will lead to a lot more hospital admissions, much later discharges and a lot poorer outcomes in the end. The consequences for providers are “no less stark” if the NHS does fail to meet its overall efficiency which will save targets 4 percent during the next four year period, if it is added.
